How much do you know about the food your dog eats? Surprisingly, many people can answer with the color of the bag, but not much else. It’s hard to find good information on canine nutrition. There is so much conflicting advice, and that makes sense. Some people see what works for their dogs and assume it transfers over to every dog. There’s good news though! There are a lot of across-the-board facts regarding canine nutrition that you can use to fit your dog’s specific needs. There are several vet-recommended brands of kibble, so talk to your veterinarian about what kibble they think is best for your dog. Raw is also a good option for many dogs. If you want to feed kibble but still supplement your dog’s diet to give them an extra boost, you can add multivitamins or fresh food to give them some extra nutrients. We give all of our board and train dogs (as well as our own!) a powdered multivitamin called Volhard Endurance. It has freeze-dried chicken, beef, or pork liver, wheat, apples, kelp, and more. It includes vitamins and minerals, and freeze dried and dehydrated fruits and vegetables provide more nutrients than the ingredients in processed kibble. If you want to add fresh fruit and vegetables, you can add things like green beans, blueberries, kale, and broccoli on top of the kibble. Raw chicken quarters, duck heads, and whole sardines are also great additives!
